Give me Olivia!

What are the qualities of a good leader? For me, the essential qualities are: 1. A willingness to investigate the issues with an open mind. 2. The capability to make decisions in a nonpartisian fashion. 3. The competence to not be afraid to ask questions, realizing that he or she cannot possibly understand ALL the issues in a given community. Underlying these leadership qualities is the ability to be a good listener.

Last year a group of us came together at Olivia Diaz’s request to discuss issues involving our elders in Nevada County. Olivia wanted to know about the various agencies that support elders and their caregivers. She asked a lot of questions. She listened. Olivia came with an open mind and an open heart.

It’s easy to say, “I know it all.” A person with sincere integrity says, “I’m curious and I want to investigate the issues from both both sides of the aisle.”

I want a supervisor who is willing to delve into the complex issues facing our county, and not dismiss important details because new information may question his or her belief system. Give me someone who is honest, competent and a good listener. Give me Olivia!
