Girl, 9, ok after fall in South Yuba River

A nine-year-old girl slipped into the South Yuba River near the Highway 49 bridge on Monday, but was able to get back to shore unharmed, authorities said.

The girl told authorities she was playing with her sister near the river when her sister started to slip into the water. The girl pushed her sister up away from the river, but then fell in herself, said Shawn Olson, an engineer with the North San Juan Volunteer Fire Department.

The girl washed ashore after traveling “a few hundred yards” in the water, Olson said, and then was able to hike back up to safety.

No medical or emergency personnel was needed, Olson said.
