Gas prices double the purchase price of a car

A random thought as gas prices shock us:

The gas to run a new car 100,000 miles is about the same as the car costs.

(Assumptions: 2008 dollars, $5 gas, $15,000 for an economy car that gets 33 miles per gallon, $30,000 for an SUV or pickup that gets 16 miles per gallon.)

A hybrid is about half this ratio, since they cost a lot and get good mileage.
