Funding to help rural counties

The Sierra Economic Development Corporation was awarded $595,000 to boost green construction, broadband service and reduce forest fuel loads by utilizing biomass technologies in rural areas.

The money will be used to implement three United States Department of Agriculture rural development programs in the four counties SEDCorp serves.

The funding will help remote Sierra County which is struggling with an unemployment rate twice the state average. The county will get $45,000 for a loan program to support the extension of broadband service and another $50,000 to develop plans for wood pellet and pellet stove manufacturing in the Loyalton Business Park.

SEDCorp will use $500,000 to support businesses in El Dorado, Placer, Nevada and Sierra counties.

SEDCorp can now accept applications for business loans up to $150,000. These loans can be used for equipment, inventory, supplies, furniture, vehicles, and working capital.
