Free fish available to thwart West Nile virus

Mosquito fish will be given away Friday as the West Nile virus season approaches.

The fish will be available from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Nevada County Resource Conservation District office. at 113 Presley Way, Suite No. 1 in Grass Valley, across from the Nevada County Country Club golf course.

Names and addresses will be collected to track where the fish go in the county. Fish will be given out in plastic bags and the number provided will depend on the size of the pond.

There have been no reports of West Nile virus in Nevada County this year, but 25 dead birds tested positive for it here last year. The virus can kill horses who are not vaccinated, make humans sick and in rare cases, cause people to die.
