Forum on Mideast peace coming up Saturday, Feb. 20

The 62-year long conflict between Israel and Palestine has appeared unsolvable. A nonviolent solution would be miraculous; and yet, recently a miracle did happen in the tiny West Bank village of Bil’in, which has been a leader in nonviolent resistance to the wall and the occupation.

After five years of steadfast adherence to nonviolent protest, Bil’iners watched Israeli bulldozers dismantle part of the Separation Wall, thus restoring to the village one-third of the land that had been taken by the wall’s construction.

There are many Israelis and Palestinians who are working jointly and nonviolently towards a shared future based on equality and justice. Dismantling the wall is a sign of hope that their efforts can bear fruit.

Three American peace activists, Lisa Nessan, Lynn MacMichael and Jacob Pace, who have extensive field experience in the region, are coming to Nevada City to present “A Nonviolent Future in Israel/Palestine? Perspectives on Resistance and Peace” Saturday, Feb. 20, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Madelyn Helling Library Community Room. We can learn from them about nonviolent actions in Israel/Palestine, and about tools to use globally and locally to support the grassroots peace builders.
