Former Grass Valley resident dies in car crash

An 18-year-old Colorado man who was heading to see family in Nevada County was killed early Wednesday morning when he crashed his sport utility vehicle near the Interstate 80 crossing of the Colorado-Wyoming border.

Evan Brown, 18, formerly of Grass Valley, was driving north on Colorado Highway 13 at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. Thirty-one miles north of Craig, his black Ford Excursion veered to the left for unknown reasons and began rotating counter-clockwise. The vehicle rolled more than two times before coming to a rest on the drivers’ side.

“We don’t know what caused the accident,” Moffat County Sheriff’s Coroner Owen Grant said.

The crash was not reported until about 5 a.m., when a passing trucker called authorities, Grant said.

“It’s the main highway here but it’s pretty remote,” he said.

Brown had been living in Steamboat Springs, Colo., for at least six months and had a California drivers’ license, according to authorities. According to the Colorado State Patrol, he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Grant said he believed Brown was headed to Nevada County to visit his mother.

The sheriff’s office is testing the crash for drug and alcohol use, something Grant said is routine for crashes in Colorado.
