Fire watch today

Nevada County and much of Northern California will be under a National Weather Service fire watch today through Friday as heat, wind and extremely dry conditions combine.

North winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are predicted this afternoon in the foothills. Winds then are expected to come out of the south Thursday into Friday morning.

Those winds, dry vegetation and low humidities from temperatures in the high 80s will create ideal fire conditions, the weather service said.

County residents should call the burn day information number of 274-7928 just before burning outdoor brush piles during the watch to see if it will be allowed that day.

Monday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection initially declared a burn day, but later rescinded it as winds began to whip the northern part of the state. Those winds caused a no-burn day on Tuesday.
