Fire tax scare tactics

About Measure R, the Penn Valley Fire Tax, yes, it would be nice to have more fire stations, but we’re not in the city. We’re in rural Nevada County. I don’t like the tactics of fear used to scare people into voting by telling them we may not get to your house on time or you may have to wait for an ambulance from Grass Valley or we’re not ready for another 49er Fire without this tax.

Yes, it’s only a few dollars more a month, but where does it (a few dollars) stop? We’re only paying a few dollars for the landfill, a few for Western Gateway Park, a few for schools, NID and others. What’s next, a few bucks for a dog park? A little more for park upkeep? More school repairs? I think you get the picture.

And last, an automatic increase of up to 5 percent a year without voter approval. I don’t know anybody that gets automatic raises like that! In 10 years, that’s a 50 percent increase. Sounds greedy to me! As a former firefighter, I understand the tax, but as a homeowner I am tired of getting hosed!
