Finding the emotional will to lose weight

When you decide to lose weight, these days you needn’t look far for sound information about diet and exercise. On the other hand, finding and maintaining the emotional will to change can greatly improve the success rate for weight management.

People may be in a better position to live without overeating when they understand how it functions in their lives. Answers may be found in the “emotional system” of families. Patterns get set in family relationships, where people unwittingly adapt themselves to others. This inner tension, in some people, is managed through food.

One interesting study observed that weight loss occurred when the family system changed, at least temporarily. Without exception, the desire to lose weight appeared when a relationship shifted that changed the emotional climate for the dieter.

In one case, a husband’s job changed and he became more emotionally available. In another, a difficult mother-in-law relationship became manageable after the family moved. Once the emotional climate improved, the dieter was able to make changes. If the climate shifted back, weight was regained.

Therapy to help individuals discover the link between relationships and eating dilemmas offers new possibilities in weight loss treatment.
