Film composer looks forward to conducting

Composers can ply their trade in a variety of ways. Jerry Grant proves this.

For one, he has conducted film scores and musicals for the past 28 years. His career in Los Angeles included music scoring for TV shows such as “The Secret World of Alex Mack,” “Quantum Leap,” Disney Animation, A&E and Discovery documentaries.

For another, he’s been guest conductor at UCLA and the Sun Valley Idaho Summer Music Festival, and now in Grass Valley, where he is making his conducting debut.

The matinee performance at 2 p.m. takes place Nov. 12, when Grant will premiere a new commission, “Classical Serenade,” a work that, he says, captures the spirit of the Classical era. It will be part of the closing concert of the MIM Fall Fest.

For those who are out of the area who’d like to follow Grant’s work, he’s planning several other concerts from the Bay Area up to Sacramento. On Nov. 8 and 9, his compositions “Changing Light” and DreamCatchers” will be performed at the CSU-Sacramento New Music Festival, where he is one of five composers who were commissioned to compose for an all-star quartet.

“I’m really thrilled,” Grant said, “to have these many performances of my concert music since moving to Grass Valley.”

Tickets for Nov. 12 are $16-24 and may be purchased by calling 265-6124. For the CSU concert, starting at 8 p.m., they are $12 at the door (Capistrano Hall).
