Fight for reform of health insurance

“California’s largest health insurer has set aside $2 million for what is likely to be a deep-pocketed campaign to undermine the health-care reforms being pushed by Democratic lawmakers and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger” (The Union, May 25).

Be prepared for a series of slick, anti-health insurance reform TV spots from Blue Cross’ front organization, aimed at frightening an easily manipulated electorate.

And $2 million is nothing compared to what the private, for-profit health insurance industry will be “setting aside” when faced with the threat of genuine health insurance reform – none of the seriously considered current reform proposals do so, whether from the governor or the Democrats.

Real insurance reform, like that embodied in California state Sen. Sheila Kuehl’s single-payer bill (SB840), will only come to us when, at the grassroots level, enough of the electorate insists that it does.

Perhaps health insurers are actually more worried that Michael Moore’s new film, “SICKO,” which looks at the collapsing health insurance system in the U.S. and which received a standing ovation at the recent Cannes film festival, will be the trigger that brings this about. The film opens here on June 29.
