Fearing no fish: Grass Valley Sportsmen’s Club hosts 47th annual Trout Derby (PHOTO GALLERY)

For 47 years the Grass Valley Sportsmen’s Club has kept the tradition of fishing alive for area families with its annual trout fishing derby.

The derby was initially held at the pond at Condon Park but moved to Lions Lake at the Nevada County Fairgrounds sometime during the 1980s when the event outgrew the pond.

Saturday, over 310 children registered to take part in the free event.

One by one the young fishermen and women could be seen casting out their bait, some with the help of their parents, and some all by themselves.

Before the event almost 2,000 pounds of fish from the Mt. Lassen Trout Farm were poured into the lake, making the odds of catching one very good for the youngsters.

Up for grabs were prizes including rod and reel combos for catching the three heaviest fish as well as for catching the longest one.
