Faith and reason

Many people back Bush because of abortion and homosexuality. Both of these issues are closely tied to faith. However, voters who are religious and also believe that abortion and homosexuality are wrong do not necessarily back Bush.

Perhaps this is based on a respect for the separation of church and state which precludes their wishing to impose their personal view on those that disagree. Perhaps their faith is tempered by reflection on historical faith-based issues such as the justification of slavery by various churches during our civil war. It is also difficult to ignore the fallibility of faith when one remembers the last words of the murderous perpetrators of 9/11: “God is great.”

With the terrorist danger, reason should be used to determine our vote. Immediately after 9/11 the world was largely with us. We went after al-Qaida but only half-heartedly and bin Laden got away. Attacking Iraq strengthened al-Qaida recruitment and alienated our allies.

Bush ignored advice warning of the difficulty of the “post-war” phase. Thus our military could not maintain order. Administration policy led to the Abu Ghraib scandal. We are in a mess. We cannot afford another four years of wrong decisions.
