Experiencing the wonders of being a film extra

I didn’t know my brother had so many teeth, but there he was, on my home TV screen.

His “Wild Hogs” film debut came and went quickly. I had to pause much of the final segment of the film to track him down among the leather jacket-clad Del Fuegos motorcycle group.

Ah, the wonders of being a film extra.

One minute you’re expecting to be used as a relatively nondescript warm body in a crowd scene, and the next minute you’re plucked from that group because the role of biker No. 11 or No. 12 needed someone with a rugged look.

Of course, my lucky brother knew how to smile during a December day last year after being told the parking lot of his “group’s new biker bar was made of leather,” and he and the rest of the Del Fuegos now could get a close-up look at it.

For goodness sakes, the rest of us from the “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” scene that ran during the movie’s credits helped make his gang’s bar, so you’d think we’d get a little more face time.

Yeah, it was fun for me, my parents and two older brothers to participate, even if only one of us ended up in the film and it was one of the coldest days of the year in Southern California.

That’s right, the magic filmmakers insisted that it appear like a mild spring day when it was 45 degrees and blustery. For some unexplained reason, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” host Ty Pennington got to keep his heavy tan jacket on while the rest of us had to wear our blue “Extreme Makeover” shirts.

Anyway, it was a funny way for “Wild Hogs” to end.

I shouldn’t complain about the experience too much.

The production crew served us pancakes for breakfast, doughnuts for breaks between filming (I think that was meant for everyone) and copious amounts of something good (which I only remember as including chicken and stir-fried noodles) for lunch.

So, that’s the middle brother who never needed braces showing off teeth he seemingly never shows elsewhere in “Wild Hogs.”

Maybe he was just teeth chatteringly cold like the rest of us.


“Wild Hogs” is Greg Moberly’s second movie as an extra. He also froze as a crowd extra for “Rookie of the Year” in the early 1990s.
