Evelyn Gardiner

A memorial celebration for Evelyn Foote Gardiner of Grass Valley will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Trolley Junction Restaurant in Nevada City.

Mrs. Gardiner died Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Grass Valley home of her niece, Cathy Gerstung.



She was born on Dec. 25, 1919, in Grass Valley to Arthur B. and Jeannette (Hooper) Foote. Her family lived in the North Star House for 60 years. Her grandfather, A.D. Foote, was manager of the North Star Mine. Her grandmother was writer and illustrator Mary Hallock Foote.

She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941, and married James F. Gardiner in 1943. She returned to Grass Valley in 1989. She was a docent at the North Star Powerhouse Mining Museum and attempted to restore the North Star House. She enjoyed reading, history, politics and gardening.




She is survived by her sister, Janet Micoleau; children Katharine, John, Arthur, Ann, Bob and Janet; grandchildren Sierra and Nikki; friend, Bernie Rosen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Star Powerhouse Mining Museum.
