Memorial services for Ernestine C. Nightingale of Rough and Ready will be conducted by the family after the first of the year. A private inurnment will be at the Indian Springs District Cemetery in Penn Valley.

Mrs. Nightingale died Thursday, Dec. 19, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 95.



She was born on Feb. 8, 1907, in Belgium, to Henry and Hubertine Chantrain. She was the last survivor of 13 children. She came from Belgium with her family at the age of 7 on the ship Lusitania on it’s last voyage before it was sunk. She married Albert Joseph Nightingale in 1922. They moved to Nevada County in 1953 and settled in the Rough and Ready area, where they were involved in cattle ranching. She enjoyed needlepoint – especially with quilts – walking, and listening to the Fruit Jar Pickers in Rough and Ready every Sunday morning.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Joan Nightingale of Rough and Ready; grandsons Steve and Dave Nightingale, both of Grass Valley; granddaughter, Diane Schram of Rough and Ready; six great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.




She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Joseph Nightingale, on April 13, 1977.

Memorial contributions may be made to Home Health Care.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
