Emerson L. French

Emerson L. French, 78, of Penn Valley died Friday, Aug. 9, at Golden Empire Convalescent Hospital in Grass Valley.

No services are planned.

Mr. French was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Oakland to D. Emerson and Rozella French. He graduated from Stockton High School and College of the Pacific. He married Sarah Jane Dobson on Aug. 29, 1948.

He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Air Force. In 1945, he was the first American pilot to land on previously Japanese-occupied Marcus Island in the western Pacific to evacuate a wounded U.S. soldier.

He also worked for Ralston Purina and Mutual of Omaha. He enjoyed golf and fishing.

He is survived by his son, David Emerson French of Penn Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Sarah Jane French, on Aug. 8.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
