Election advice

Rep. John Doolittle’s sudden epiphany in calling for a withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq needs to be recognized for what it is ” a desperate attempt to distance himself from an unpopular president and secure re-election in the face of what most certainly will be an electorate in no mood to reward those who have been lap dogs of an ethically and morally challenged administration.

I would urge all Nevada County voters to consider carefully the proposals of all of the candidates for national office.

Such consideration will reveal little differences between those proposals. With one exception, they call for an ongoing role for U.S. forces in training, defense of permanent bases and rapid strike capabilities.

Only Gov. Bill Richardson seems to support total withdrawal from Iraq, a position which will end completely the most misguided foreign policy action in the history of this nation. Democratic party officials should reconsider what seems to be the nomination of Charlie Brown by default and support an open primary that presents a choice between an echo of the Republican candidate’s newfound position as presented by Brown and an alternative candidate who supports a total withdrawal of American forces from Iraq.
