Edward Smith

Private memorial services for Edward Kraus Smith of Grass Valley will be conducted. Interment will be in Lake County.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, March 1, at home. He was 86.

He was born June 6, 1919, in Pe Ell, Wash., to Katherine Kraus Smith and Benjamin Lyman Smith. As a teenager he moved to San Francisco where he graduated from Mission High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army as an MP in Europe and Japan during World War II. He married Elizabeth Claire Nelson on Aug. 24, 1958. He retired in 1981, from the San Francisco Chronicle and since then lived in Plumas County and Sacramento, settling in Grass Valley where he had lived for 18 years. He and his wife Betty traveled the past 16 winters to Green Valley, Ariz. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. He enjoyed golfing and was a past member of the Alta Sierra Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Grass Valley; daughters Carol Ann Smith and Valarie Ann Allinder; grandchildren William Dabovich, Michelle Settle, and Jessica Rose Allinder; great-grandsons, Dakota and Trystin Dabovich, and Austin Settle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper & Weaver Mortuary.
