DVC one ‘heckuva’ league

Minutes after his Cardinals fell for the first time in Delta Valley Conference play, thanks to a dramatic, second-half comeback by Nevada Union’s Miners Friday night, Laguna Creek head football coach Mark Nill pondered the quality of the newly-formed DVC.

“It’s a heckuva of a league,” Nill said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the league champ goes 3-2 and other teams go 3-2.

“In my opinion, it is the toughest league in the section.”

Through seven weeks of football, there’s not a team in the league with an overall losing record and just one team – Franklin of Elk Grove (6-1) – remains unbeaten in league play after just two weeks of DVC competition.

Elk Grove (6-1 overall), Laguna Creek (5-2), Nevada Union (5-2) and Davis (4-3) each own 1-1 DVC marks, while Valley (3-3) is currently 0-2.

Just three teams will advance to the postseason from the DVC, meaning the final three weeks of play promise key contests every Friday night.

A quick survey of season records of leagues throughout the Sac-Joaquin Section shows that Nill might not be far off the mark. Despite having just six teams in the league, while most others have seven, the DVC has posted more victories (28) than any others.

Next in line is the Pioneer Valley League, whose teams have posted 27 victories thus far and currently stands in a three-way tie for first place among Bear River (3-0), Colfax (3-0) and Lincoln (3-0).
