DUI suspected in head-on collision near Union Hill School

Alcohol may have fueled a head-on collision that injured four people over the weekend.

Grass Valley resident Stephen Shandrew, 70, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving in a Saturday night crash on Highway 174 near Union Hill School, according to California Highway Patrol.

Shandrew was driving a 1998 Suzuki Esteem and allegedly made an abrupt left turn in front of a 2007 Subaru Forester, driven by Rough and Ready resident James Dille, 74.

Dille had minor injuries. Passenger Roger Vancouwenberghe, 62, had moderate injuries and was transported by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Passenger Joanne Vancouwenberghe, 62, had moderate injuries and was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

The Vancouwenberghes are from El Verano, Calif.

Shandrew had moderate injuries and was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. He was later booked into the Nevada County jail and is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. Booking records indicate Shandrew is a restaurant owner.
