Drowning takes 3-year-old boy

A small Grass Valley child drowned Sunday after being out of his father’s sight for just a few minutes.

Sheriff Keith Royal said father Oscar Castrejon, 29, was at a friend’s home on the 14800 block of Stagecoach Way in Rough and Ready, when his 3-year-old son, Kayden Castrejon, went out in the backyard to play with the dogs at about 4 p.m. Within a few minutes of realizing he could not hear his child playing, Castrejon went outside to find him drowned in an old fountain about 12 feet wide, Royal said.

“Whenever it involves a child like that, it’s tragic,” Royal said. “By all indications, it’s accidental.”

Emergency crews from the Rough & Ready and the Penn Valley Fire Departments attempted to revive the boy, but he was prounounced dead at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

The boy’s mother, Sarah Stokes, age unknown, of Grass Valley, was working at the time of the incident. She was located and taken to the hospital by the Sheriff’s Office,
