Double exposure for Saul Rayo and his band this weekend

Saul Rayo and Cocina del Mundo receives double exposure this weekend, first at the Grass Valley Friday Market and then Saturday at Cooper’s.

The hometown band plays two sets Friday between 6:30 and 9 p.m. and four sets Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“We easily have material for four sets,” laughed keyboardist Lou Meyer on Tuesday. “Saul’s brutal.”

The world beat/”back porch” blues band will perform songs never before heard publicly. Some originals will be from the group’s third CD, “Songs from the Kitchen,” to be released next month.

The 13-member band typically performs up to two times weekly in Northern California, said Meyer, who has been in the 2-year-old band for all but the first six months.

“This is the best band I’ve ever been in,” exclaimed Meyer, who has appeared in several rock ‘n’ roll, country and western, and blues bands.

The free Friday Market is on Mill and Main streets in downtown Grass Valley. Admission to the Cooper’s show at 235 Commercial St. in downtown Nevada City is $5.

Call Cooper’s at 265-0116 with any questions.
