Dorsey overpass struck by logging truck: Multiple vehicles damaged; highway shut down

A heel boom log loader attached to the back of a logging truck struck the underside of the Dorsey Drive overpass Wednesday afternoon, sending chunks of concrete into the southbound lanes of the Golden Center Freeway and leading to a multiple vehicle collision.

Three passenger vehicles were involved in the wreck, although no major injuries were reported.

The California Highway Patrol located the logging truck farther down the highway from the site of the crash.

Traffic was diverted off the Golden Center Freeway at the Dorsey Drive overpass for about an hour, as Caltrans conducted a structural analysis of the overpass and Fischer’s tow trucks worked to clear the vehicles.

Emergency dispatch calls were received at about 3:15 p.m. By 4 p.m. one lane of traffic had reopened, and both lanes were opened by 4:30 p.m.

Initial assessment by Caltrans officials reported the damage to be cosmetic, though were waiting for the official analysis of a Caltrans inspector.
