Doolittle retains Congressional seat

Rep. John Doolittle (R-Roseville) held off Democratic challenger Charlie Brown by 3 points in the 4th Congressional District, 49 to 46 percent, once nearly all the votes were counted.

Nevada County showed strong support for Brown, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, voting for him 54 to 41 percent. Nevada County was the only county in the sprawling northeast California district to vote for Brown, although Placer County voters chose Doolittle by only a narrow margin.

For the bulk of statewide and federal races, Nevada County showed strong support for Republican candidates.

County voters selected Republican Secretary of State incumbent Bruce McPherson by a 19 percent margin. Democrat challenger Debra Bowen won that race by 4 points statewide. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Democratic incumbent, received 10 percent fewer votes here than overall.
