Don’t miss this blues, jazz and R&B show

Juan Nelson, 2005 Grammy-winning bass player for Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals will be appearing with Tanya Scarlett ,vocals; Ahaguna G. Sun, drums and vocals; and Mick Valentino, guitar Saturday, 7:30-11 p.m., at the 5 Mile House, 18851 State Highway 20, Nevada City.

Nelson is known throughout the world and appeared on the cover of Bass Player magazine in August 2001. He has been a regular guest on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno and “Late Night with David Letterman.” “There Will Be A Light” received top honors for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album (with The Blind Boys of Alabama) and “11th Commandment” won for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

Having been called “a wicked talent on the five-string bass,” Nelson’s career took off in 1969 when he moved to Los Angeles. Since then he has been performing and recording with some big names, including John Lee Hooker, Tower of Power, All-4-One and Blackalicious. His proficiency in multiple genres of musical styles has made his sound big, round, overpowering and endearing.

Nelson’s fabulous stage presence practically steals the show. With funky slaps and flicks, Nelson could certainly hold court as the lord of the groove. He knows how to use his personality and larger-than-life appearance to wake up a crowd, but it is his incomparable skill on bass that adds credence to any live show.
