Donald Robert Haldane, founder and CEO of Haldane Computer Centers, Inc., became suddenly ill while vacationing with his wife and friends and subsequently died on May 23, 2007, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

Born on December 13, 1944 in Detroit, Michigan, Don spent his early years in Tucson, Arizona and Montebello, California, graduating from Montebello High School in 1962. He attended Long Beach State University and then accepted a position with Republic Van and Storage. After moving up through their ranks Don opened Newport Van and Storage, operating throughout southern California.

Don married Janie Elizabeth Uhl in 1965, in Arcadia, California. The couple had two sons, Mike and Eric and lived in San Gabriel, La Verne and Cypress, California. In 1978, Don and the boys lost Janie to cancer.

After Janie’s death, Don changed professions to spend more time with his sons. His second career was in real estate, quickly becoming a broker. Don worked for the Real Estate Store in Cypress, California, until 1982 when he moved the family north near Auburn, California. Don worked with Thurmond and Thurmond in Auburn, then opened Don Haldane Real Estate in 1985.

In 1986 Don married Linda Pfeiffer Lord of Auburn. They lived in Applegate, then in 1991 moved to Nevada City.

Always the entrepreneur, Don combined his love of business and electronics opened PC Solutions in Auburn in 1988. Linda, Mike and Eric soon joined the business too and expanded the company (renamed Haldane Computer Centers, Inc.) to Grass Valley in 1989 and Folsom in 1994. Although his sons eventually left to pursue other opportunities Don continued to manage the business until 2005, when he retired following the sale of the Auburn and Folsom stores.

Don’s life was celebrated by his family and friends in a memorial service held on May 31, 2007, in Nevada City, California. He is greatly missed and will be remembered for his love of family; deep, abiding friendships; care of and for the elderly; his love of travel; his playful, spontaneous nature and great sense of humor.
