Graveside services for Donald S. Hooper of Smartville will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City. A celebration of life will be conducted at 3 p.m. for family and friends at the Hooper family home in Smartville.

Mr. Hooper died Sunday, May 2, in Penn Valley. He was 48.

He was born Feb. 23, 1956, in Oakland, to Lawrence and Marietta Hooper. After graduation from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, he served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a self-employed contractor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, trap shooting and the outdoors.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Marietta Hooper of Grass Valley; brother, Jim Hooper of Penn Valley; sisters Janel Bringolf of Grass Valley, Lorraine Shatto of Auburn, Diane Conover of Quincy and Sheryl Matulewicz of Alturas; and 11 nieces and nephews.
