Documentary on childbirth planned

The woman who was was co-founder of the Conscious Birth Movement in Russia in the 1980s that inspired mothers to flock to the Black Sea to give birth in the shallow lagoons with the dolphins will be in Grass Valley to show a special film.

Elena Vladimirova Tonetti produced her 75-minute documentary, “Birth As We Know It,” which features stunning photos of 11 natural births including home birth, water birth, breech birth, birth of twins, and even birthing alone.

The film will be shown at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 at Old Christopher’s Deli at 408 Colfax Avenue in Grass Valley at no charge. The next day, Tonetti will conduct a workshop for birth providers, expectant parents and other adults to comfortably explore the effects of their own birth experience as a way of healing past traumas or to learn how to give birth at a future time without trauma. The fee for the 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. event that is being held at a private location is $110 with lunch and $170 for couples. Preregisteration through Birth and Early Parenting Educators is required at 470-8851. Go online at for more information.
