Director’s notes on ‘Oliver’

I wonder if the cast and crew of “Oliver” know just how special they are. There are well over fifty people involved, and everyone of them has contributed willingly. Two great attributes for actors are sensitivity and compassion. I have seen this several times in these young people. Two young ladies, noticing that the younger actors were getting a bit fidgety, came to me and suggested that they take the younger ones to another location and play theatre games with them, so that I could work with the principle actors.

I asked one of the principles to give me just a “tad” of compassion at the end of a particular scene. (What is a “tad” anyway?) He gave it and it was perfect! It was exactly what I had asked for. I suggested that one little orphan be a bit louder with her small solo, and she blew us all away!

I have watched moms and dads find props and costumes, carry set pieces, build flats, paint, be liaisons, coach their kids, and in general, do whatever is asked of them.

During this performance of Oliver, you will see comedic actors giving their “all” and doing it extremely well! You will see drama and pathos given with a sensitivity not usual for such young actors. But most of all, you will see young people with a purpose, whose families care about them, who are dedicated to being the best that they can be.

My thanks to Center for the Arts and its staff for their support in introducing me to their organization. I hope my future associations with them will continue to be as stimulating as this one.
