Diaz decision deferred one week by board

Gregory Diaz will be forced to wait another week to see if he will be Nevada County’s next clerk-recorder.

The Board of Supervisors interviewed Diaz this morning in an open hearing but deferred their decision to the June 26 meeting. The board found out he has elections experience but has never fully administered one.

Diaz ran for the position In June 2006, but lost in a relatively close race to Kathleen Smith. Smith had multiple problems with elections during her tenure from 2004 to April of this year, when she resigned after the board learned she had been working for one month as the City Clerk of Rio Vista.

Diaz said he was on an elections planning task force in San Francisco County during his tenure there in the county clerk-recorder’s office. He said he also served as the person who set up the media for elections and as a rover on election days, taking care of problems in 25 to 30 precincts.

Diaz said he picked up many administrative skills during his 20 year run in San Francisco, 12 as assistant clerk-recorder and eight as clerk-recorder. However, “I need to become a lot more familiar with the elections code,” he told the board.

Diaz was the only one interviewed out of six candidates who applied and were screened by two different interview panels. County Counsel Michael Jamison this morning said it appears the county could, but does not have to announce who the other candidates and screening panel members are surrounding the appointment.
