Details emerge in case of woman’s torture

A south Nevada County man remains in jail today for allegedly torturing a woman and inflicting a large number of wounds over a five-day period.

Paul Leidel, 47, of the 22000 block of Cottage Hill Drive just north of Higgins Corner, was being held at Wayne Brown Correctional Facilty on a $101,000 bail for allegedly beating a 48-year-old woman.

“The injuries are indicative of a sexual assault,” Sheriff Keith Royal said this morning. Her wounds include numerous bruises on the arms, legs and inside of the thighs, puncture wounds around her breasts and multiple backbone fractures, he said.

Royal said the woman was able to escape her attacker with the aid of a friend. Employees at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital called authorities after examining her wounds.
