Dead bird is county’s first West Nile virus case

A dead bird found in the Red Dog Road area is the first confirmed case of West Nile virus in Nevada County this year.

The Nevada County Department of Environmental Health confirmed the case this morning. There have been no reported human or horse cases in the county.

Neighborning counties have reported bird cases in recent weeks, including three in Butte County and one in Yuba County, according to the California Department of Public Health. No human or equine cases have been reported in the region, but three human cases have occured in Kern County.

Nevada County residents are asked to notify the state if they find any dead birds or squirrels that have been dead less than 24 hours and do not appear injured. You can do that by calling 1-877-968-2473, or by logging on to http://westnile.ca.gov/deadbird.cfm.

To help combat West Nile virus here, county agricultural officials will provide free mosquito fish from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. They will also be available during the same hours on July 26.

Those picking up the fish from the Nevada County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office should go through Gate 1 at the fairgrounds. The fish are used in ponds to consume mosquitos that could be carrying the West Nile virus.
