David Michael Mackenzie Stephenson of Grass Valley died Thursday, Nov. 28, at home. He was 54.

No services are planned. His remains will be cremated and eventually returned to Scotland to be reunited with his native countryside.

Mr. Stephenson was born on Aug. 26, 1948, in Duns, Scotland, to Alexandrina Davison Stephenson and Mathew Stephenson. He spent his childhood growing up on farms in the Scottish countryside.

He came to the United States to live in San Francisco in 1978 and moved to Grass Valley in the summer of 2000. He was a self-employed stonemason for 37 years, being one of the few masons who completed an apprenticeship and became a master in traditional Scottish dry-stone masonry. He was a poet, enjoyed animals and spent much of his time outdoors.

He is survived by his daughter, Rania Mackenzie Stephenson; brothers, Guy Stephenson, Alec Borthwick and George Borthwick; sister, Ruth Dickson; ex-wife, Elizabeth Zenker; seven nephews and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and uncles, Dode and Ned.
