Shoplifter allegedly assaults store manager

A woman caught in the act of shoplifting reportedly then assaulted the store manager when she was confronted Saturday afternoon.

A woman was in a store in the 500 block of Sutton Way when she stole items, concealing them under a shirt, said Grass valley Police Sgt. Joe Matteoni.

She was trying to leave the store when she was confronted by the manager.

The woman then lifted a wooden box over her head and hit the manager in the face with it, Matteoni said. She also reportedly tried to bite and scratch the employee before fleeing.

The suspect, identified as Renee Marlena McGrath, 29, was located a short distance away and arrested on suspicion of robbery. She was being held in county jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
