North San Juan woman arrested for vehicle theft after failed attempt to flee

A 36-year-old woman from North San Juan was taken into custody Sunday morning for vehicle theft after a failed attempt to escape.

According to Sgt. Tim Werner of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy sheriff spotted a suspicious vehicle near the Pleasant Lane and Maroon Place area off of Rattlesnake Road at around 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

Melody Christene Burns and another person jumped out and attempted to flee when the officer approached the car.

“There were two people in the car initially, but we only found one,” Werner said, adding that more information will be available after a report on the case is released.

The identity of the other occupant in the car is unknown at this point, Werner said.

The vehicle that Burns was in was a 1994 Honda Acura Integra. It was confirmed stolen from the Grass Valley Police Department jurisdiction, Werner said.

Burns was charged for vehicle theft, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and three counts of probation violations, Werner said. She also has two outstanding warrants for the possession of a controlled substance, according to information from the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office website.

Burns is being held in lieu of a $49,000 bail.
