Nevada City driver arrested after reportedly hitting motorcycle, fleeing scene

A Nevada City woman reportedly tried to flee the scene after hitting a motorcyclist, then ran over another motorcycle whose driver was trying to stop her.

Michele Marie Stewart, 39, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, causing injury, as well as assault with a deadly weapon causing injury and hit and run causing injury.

Stewart collided with a motorcycle in the 800 block of Zion Street at about 12:35 p.m. Monday, said Nevada City Police Sgt. Paul Rohde.

The rider flipped over Stewart’s vehicle, injuring his shoulder, Rohde said.

She reportedly then fled the scene, with a second motorcycle rider, the injured man’s son following her.

The son was trying to get Stewart to stop and got in front of her, then got off his motorcycle, Rohde said. Stewart allegedly hit his motorcycle, then ran over it, but was unable to leave the scene.

Police officers arrived and smelled alcohol on Stewart, but she refused to take a Breathalyzer test, Rohde said. A blood sample was taken and the results are pending.

Stewart was booked into county jail and released on $75,000 bail.
