TRUCKEE, Calif. — A Las Vegas man was arrested Tuesday after police say they interrupted a carjacking attempt in which he tried to pull a woman out of her car by her neck.
At about 3:40 p.m., a Truckee Police Department officer spotted 29-year-old Nathan Daniel Jones assaulting the woman in her car at the Truckee Beacon gas station at 10009 Donner Pass Road, according to a TPD statement.
Moments earlier, the officer was flagged down by a resident who reported a subject was jumping on cars and breaking windows in the area.
According to police, the officer physically removed Jones off the victim and arrested him.
Jones was later found to be under the influence of a stimulant and continued to “act out violently after he was taken into custody,” police said.
The female victim, 29, of Truckee, was treated for a minor neck injury and later released from Tahoe Forest Hospital.
Prior to that incident, Jones attempted to enter another vehicle, occupied by a female adult, by breaking out the driver’s side window at the same gas station; the victim was able to drive off, according to police, and was not injured.
Additionally, several parked cars nearby had windows broken and other vandalism.
Police were provided surveillance footage from the Beacon station, showing what police believe is Jones attempting to enter the first vehicle, and after being unsuccessful, moving toward the second attempt.
“Although this type of violence is unusual in Truckee, it’s important to remember it’s always possible,” TPD Chief Adam McGill said in a statement. “People should remain alert to their surroundings. I’m pleased our officer’s quick and decisive intervention prevented further violence and trauma to the victims.”
A search of Jones’ belongings revealed a one-pound, heat-sealed plastic bag of marijuana and a homemade weapon commonly known as a “sap” or a “blackjack,” according to police.
Jones may be a transient passing through the area, according to police, and was recently arrested by Grass Valley Police for an outstanding warrant. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office lists Jones’ residence as Nevada City.
Jones was booked into Nevada County Jail in Nevada City on suspicion of four felony and eight misdemeanor charges, including two counts of attempted carjacking, felony battery, battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest, possession of an illegal weapon, possession of a pound of suspected marijuana, and four counts of vandalism.
His bail was set a $210,000.
TPD is asking witnesses to come forward and contact the department at 530-550-2320.
