Former Pleasant Valley parent club president takes plea in embezzlement case

A Penn Valley woman arrested in March 2014 for reportedly embezzling $11,000 while serving as president of the Pleasant Valley Elementary School District Parent Club has pleaded no contest to two counts, in return for a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.

Members of the parent club realized the theft after checking the group’s account, finding $500 when there should have been about $8,500 in the account. It eventually was determined during the investigation that the group’s president, Michele Renee Huni, had taken about $11,000 from the account since October.

She reportedly spent the money on a cell phone, groceries, for cash and other purchases.

Huni was charged with felony grand theft by embezzlement, aid by misrepresentation, grand theft and perjury by false application for identification. She pleaded no contest to felony theft by embezzlement and misdemeanor welfare fraud for a potential of 365 jail and five years of supervised probation. She also stipulated to the amount of restitution owed the School District ($9,825.45) and the District Attorney’s office will be seeking restitution for the county as well in the amount of $7,643, for the welfare fraud.

Huni is set for sentencing at 1:30 p.m. on May 18.
