First week of murder trial to wrap Feb. 11

The trial of homicide suspects Scott Hollingshead and his brother, Christopher Nix, will wrap up the first week of testimony today in Nevada County Superior Court.

It was anticipated that Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Ow would be focusing on how searchers recovered the weapon the prosecution believes was used in the murder of Brian Spalding.

Hollingshead and Nix reportedly were waiting for Spalding when he returned from a weekly poker game to his Banner Mountain residence on the night of April 14, 2014. They allegedly shot Spalding before dragging him from the car and kicking him repeatedly; he died at the scene of multiple blunt-force trauma.

On Wednesday, Placer County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Martin returned to the stand, showing the jury each item of bleach-stained clothing retrieved from a washing machine at the Hollingshead residence.

He testified that the two sets of men’s clothes found in the washer appeared to have been recently washed, and did not smell of bleach.

The bulk of the testimony Wednesday came from criminalists from the state Department of Justice, who processed the evidence at the murder scene — including seven gun shell casings, two latex glove fingertips and a bloody shoe print — and at the Hollingshead residence.
