Evidentiary hearing set in I-80 homicide case

A preliminary hearing into the evidence against a Reno man charged with homicide has been set for early December.

Maurice Di Aundra Rogers was arrested after Felicia Romaine Spruell-Jones, 46, of Reno, was found in the road under the Interstate 80 overpass at Farad Road above Truckee on April 4.

Spruell-Jones’ cause of death has been ruled to be gunshot wounds. Detectives believe she was killed the morning she was found, but were still determining whether she was shot where she was found or dumped there.

Rogers was believed to be driving an early 2000s white Cadillac DeVille with paper plates from Nevada, and a law enforcement bulletin was distributed throughout Nevada and to agencies in the greater Sacramento area. He was located and detained in South Sacramento on April 8, and booked on a murder charge.

A firearm was recovered during the course of the investigation, and was sent to the DOJ’s Bureau of Forensic Services for forensic testing to determine its potential involvement in this case.

Rogers pleaded not guilty in June.

Rogers appeared in Nevada County Superior Court Thursday. The evidentiary hearing was set for Dec. 6, and is anticipated to last at least two days.
