Escaped campfire leads to arrest

Grass Valley Police officers arrested a woman after she reportedly started a campfire that escaped into surrounding brush off Sutton Way Monday evening.

A witness called 911 at about 6:30 p.m. to report that the woman was lighting a fire in a wooded area in the 11000 block of Sutton Way, said Lt. Alex Gammelgard.

She told officers she saw the woman feeding the fire with dry vegetation.

Officers arrived to find that the campfire already had been extinguished by firefighters, but appeared to have been lit under dry manzanita branches and escaped the campfire, Gammelgard said.

Officers did an area check but did not locate the suspect. The witness called the police several hours later when she spotted the woman again, Gammelgard said.

Tracie Noel Timmons, 42, was arrested on suspicion of arson and remained in county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
