CHP: 3 persons hurt in DUI-suspected collision

A Grass Valley man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after a two-vehicle collision that sent him and the other driver to the hospital.

Herman Pegoda, 82, of Grass Valley, was driving northbound on Rough and Ready Highway at about 2:45 p.m. Monday when he veered across the double yellow lines, directly into the path of a Lexus being driven by Jeff D. Mills, 53, of Grass Valley, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Marc Morrison.

Pegoda’s Ford Fusion hit the Lexus head-on, causing significant damage, Morrison said, adding that everyone was seat-belted and the air bags deployed, preventing serious injuries.

Pegoda complained of minor pain to the chest and did not seek treatment.

Pegoda’s passenger, Barbara Pegoda, 80, was taken to Rideout Hospital with pain in her neck and back.

Mills was determined to be under the influence and was arrested at the scene, Morrison said. He was then transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital to be treated for a wrist fracture and chest pain.

Rough and Ready Highway was closed for about an hour, and the collision remains under investigation.
