Carmichael man arrested on knife, drug charges

A California Highway Patrol officer stopped a suspicious vehicle with out-of-state plates Wednesday and ended up citing the driver and arresting his passenger after reportedly locating marijuana, methamphetamine and an illegal knife.

The vehicle, which had Minnesota license plates, attracted the officer’s attention at about 9:20 p.m., because its rear window was broken out and there was other damage, said CHP spokesman Greg Tassone.

The driver reportedly made an abrupt turn off South Auburn Street onto a side street, and then pulled over and stopped at Empire Street.

The occupants reportedly said they were from out of the area and were lost, and the passenger — identified as Jerry Thomas Scott, 22, of Carmichael — asked if he could exit the vehicle.

When he did so, the officer saw a large knife with a 7-inch double-sided blade on the seat, Tassone said. He reportedly also smelled marijuana.

A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered a baggie of meth, a small amount of marijuana on the driver, and a large machete, which was legal, Tassone said.

The driver was cited for the marijuana and released, according to Tassone.

Scott was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and possessing the knife, and was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.
