Jim Cardwell’s everyday life is busy.

He’s been a registered nurse for 23 years, 17 of those years in the emergency room. The former San Juan Ridge resident, who now calls Oroville home, seasonally works in cattle roundups and branding at the Amaril Ranch in Williams, and still finds time to make salsa for local residents.

In between his work duties, Cardwell writes. His poems and essays have appeared in publications such as Acorn, Journal of Nursing Jocularity and Pegasus Review.

Cardwell, who shares his cowboy poetry regularly at Elko, Nev., Visalia, Colusa, Monterey and Oroville events, will be featured with Clarence Wager and Karen Macy at the Center for the Arts this Friday.

Wager is from Meadow Vista; Macy is from the Grass Valley area.

The Rough and Ready Fruit Jar Pickers will also play cowboy music during Friday’s 7:30 p.m. benefit for the Nevada County Poetry Series.

Admission is $7 general and $5 for seniors and students. Tickets are at Herb Shop Records, Odyssey Books, The Book Seller and at the door.

Call 423-8196 or 274-8384 for more information.
