Couple found dead in home identified

Two people found dead in their Nevada City home Monday have been identified as Herman Theodore Theal Jr., 67, and his wife Carrie Ruth Theal, 57.

The Theals’ bodies were found by a neighbor checking on them for a family member. Investigators said they were lying on their living room floor with a shotgun near their bodies.

Investigators say evidence at the crime scene so far implies suicide, but there will be no official cause of death until autopsies are complete.

Mr. Theal had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, while an autopsy performed today will reveal more about the nature of Mrs. Theal’s death.

Investigators say there was no sign of a struggle or break-in at the Theal’s Oak Ridge Road home.

Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Salivar said investigators have interviewed a man who lives in a guest house on the property, and he is not a suspect. Salivar said there are no suspects at this time.

Deputies have notified the Theals’ family members in the Modesto area including Mrs. Theal’s brother and parents, and the couple’s daughter who lives in Las Vegas, Nevada.
