County students take honors at piano auditions

A Nevada County Piano student took international honors in the 2002 National Piano Playing Auditions, and nine Nevada County piano students were named national winners at the Nevada County Center, April 16-17 at Miners Foundry Cultural Center.

The international winner was Dylan Hoy-Bianchi, student of Sandy Van Heeringen.

National winners were: Caleigh Cox, Ian Crews, Alison Dowd, Luca Fistarol, Mallory Meier and Melanie Schmitt, students of Jean Poff; and Alannah Inwards, Bryanna Lloyd and Spencer Stecko, students of Van Heeringen.

An international winner plays a 15-piece memorized program for the judge, and a national winner plays a 10-piece memorized program. The adjudicator was Inez Del Rio of Sacramento.

The Nevada County Center registered 45 students to play nearly 300 piano pieces for Professor Del Rio. Students who did not enter for national honors played programs classified as state (seven to nine pieces), district (four to six pieces), or local (two or three pieces).

Teachers were Dr. Aileen James, Poff, Joan Tumilty and Van Heeringen.

The National Piano-Playing Auditions are sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers. Students are encouraged to retain and expand their repertoire, and the judge’s report commends the good points of a performance. For information, call Poff, chair of the Nevada County Center, at 273-6875.
