Cookbook author at The Book Seller

Penn Valley resident Bob LaRive owns what is purported to be San Francisco’s oldest restaurant, the Fior d’Italia, about which a book has been written and will be discussed Saturday at The Book Seller, 107 Mill St., Grass Valley, at 3:30 p.m.

“The Fabulous Fior: Over 100 Years in an Italian Kitchen” is a lively tale of cookery and history as seen through the eyes of Italian-American immigrants dating back to the Gold Rush.

The book “chronicles the shenanigans of Prohibition clientele (as well as) the challenges of pleasing VIPS, such as Enrico Caruso, Richard M. Nixon and Luciano Pavarotti.” Of course, there are lots of recipes, too.

Both LaRive and the author, Francine Brevetti, will be on hand to answer questions and sign books, and antipasti from the Fior d’Italia will be served.
