Work by Caltrans on the Dorsey Drive intersection along Highway 49 will continue in Grass Valley for the duration of the summer.

Planned for more than two decades, the Dorsey project will provide direct access to and from regional destinations, including Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital — the only hospital in western Nevada County — and the Sierra College Nevada County campus.

It is one of the biggest public works transportation improvement projects within the Grass Valley area in recent years.

The first phase of the project involves excavation and creation of new roadways and widening of the south side of the Dorsey Drive overpass and road. Phase two tackles the northern side. Phase three aims to improve Joerschke Drive, install medians and lay final asphalts.

The estimated $25 million project is expected to be completed after two summer construction seasons and was expected to be among the topics covered by Caltrans at a Thursday night open house at Grass Valley City Hall, along with three other major road projects that are affecting commuting residents.
